“Òpi” Wins Bronze Audience Award at Prestigious Brooklyn Horror Film Festival

Marta Giec’s folk horror “Òpi” has made its mark in New York. At the 11th Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, where the film celebrated its North American premiere, the Platige Films production received the Bronze Audience Award, finishing third in the festival’s audience vote.

“Òpi” Celebrates Success in New York

On October 19, “Òpi” celebrated its North American premiere in New York, with members of the filmmaking team in attendance. The sold-out screening in Brooklyn was met with an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from American audiences, who expressed their appreciation for the Polish horror film through the festival’s audience vote. The film returned from New York with the Bronze Audience Award.

“This award is a wonderful culmination of our international premiere in New York. Meeting the American audience was particularly special for us, as horror culture is incredibly well established there. People watch a lot of horror films, and they produce plenty of them, too. It’s fantastic that Kashubian folk beliefs and our story captivated them. After the screening, we received many interesting questions, not only about the beliefs themselves but also about the psychology of the characters. I believe Polish cinema steeped in the supernatural genuinely intrigued them as something entirely original,” says Dominika Kłoczewiak, co-screenwriter and associate director.

“What a joy! Recognition from audiences is the greatest reward a filmmaker can receive!” adds Marta Giec, the film’s director and co-screenwriter.

Autumn Festival Circuit and Halloween Screenings

Following its excellent reception in Gdynia and across the Atlantic, “Òpi” continues its autumn festival circuit. The film is among the features competing for the prestigious Méliès d’Argent Award in the Best European Feature Film category at Sweden’s Lund Fantastic Film Festival, running from October 28 to November 4.

“Òpi” was also screened at Splat!FilmFest, one of Poland’s leading horror film festivals, where it is in contention for another coveted audience award.

To celebrate Halloween, the film was also shown in selected cinemas across Poland as part of special horror film marathons. Further details and screening information are available at next-film.pl.

About the Film

“Òpi” marks the feature-length directorial debut of Marta Giec, with Dominika Kłoczewiak serving as associate director. The two also co-wrote the screenplay. Słupsk, 2002. Trina is counting down the hours until her 18th birthday, planning to escape her toxic mother. But her plans are derailed by the unexpected arrival of relatives from Kashubia — her mysterious aunt Helena and her paralysed grandmother Regina. Their visit sets off a chain of events in which everyday reality becomes increasingly intertwined with Kashubian folk beliefs and Trina’s nightmarish dreams.

“Òpi” will be released in cinemas across Poland on January 1, 2027.

The production of the film and the filmmakers’ attendance at its premiere in New York were financially supported by the Polish Film Institute.
